Due to significant damage to the CREB track in Far North Queensland following Tropical Cyclone Jasper, trekkers planning to start or end in Cooktown are advised to reroute.
An interim start and finish point is recommended to be Mt Molloy. It is not known when the CREB track, in Section One, will be restored.
Trekkers planning to start or finish their trek in Cooktown in the near future are strongly advised to consult Section Coordinators for the latest advice and updates on damage in the local area before starting.
Update 6th August 2024 – Some issues with the trail as it exists now include, especially for animal trekkers.
- Getting out of Cooktown as the highway poses a dangerous issue.
- Following the Highway south of Cooktown including the Annan River Bridge and the Black Mountain Pass.
- The road past Lions Den to Ayton is very narrow with nowhere to get off. Now a very busy road.
- The CREB track is closed and the Daintree River crossing unserviceable.
- Access over Stewarts Creek south of Daintree doubtful.
The best suggestion for trekkers with animals is the start at the bottom of the Bump Track.
Trekkers on foot or with a mountain bike could still start at Cooktown and use the Bloomfield Track.
The once quiet roads when section 1 was mapped in 1991, are now very busy roads that do not allow safe access especially with animals.
