Planning A Trek
Preparing for Adventure Through the Rugged and Remote Sections of the National Trail
Plan your trek
Everything you need to know to prepare for your journey along the National Trail
All trekkers must be current members of the National Trail.
- To use TSR campsites, you must obtain a permit and contact the relevant LLS at least 48 hours in advance. Approval may be refused if conditions are not met.
- Submit TRF and TSR forms 1–4 weeks prior
- Register your trek (login required)
- Check with Section Coordinators for updates
- Most trekkers travel on foot, by mountain bike, or with pack horses.
- Others have used donkeys, camels, or horse-drawn carts.
- Motorised transport is not permitted.
- Cooktown (north) to south – Original full-length plan. Travelling south keeps the sun at your back.
- Healesville (south) to north – Popular for those adjusting to northern heat, enjoying trade winds, and preferring a slower start.
- Allow plenty of time for a full-length trek minimum 6–7 months, averaging ~25 km per day.
- Some trekkers take longer, embracing a relaxed pace to fully enjoy the journey.
- Check seasonal conditions for each section to plan your trek safely and comfortably.
